미국 최대 태권도 고단자회, 22주년 기념 켄벤션 및 명예의 전당 시상식 성료
아틀란타 웨스틴 에어포트 호텔에서 열린 대규모 행사, 새 회장 선출과 다양한 수상식으로 태권도의 가치 재확인 신재균 관장 제6대 회장 선출, 다양한 세미나 및 수상자 발표로 태권도 발전과 명예 강조
[KtN 임우경기자] 지난 4월 12일부터 14일까지 미국 아틀란타 웨스틴 에어포트 호텔에서 열린 미국 최대 태권도 고단자회의 연례 켄벤션 및 명예의 전당 시상식이 120명의 회원과 300여 명의 하객이 참석한 가운데 성황리에 개최되었다. 이번 행사에서는 신재균 오레건주 관장이 제6대 회장으로 선출되어 2025년부터 3년간 봉사할 예정임을 발표했다.
이번 켄벤션은 16주년 명예의 전당 시상식과 4주년 명인 시상식도 함께 진행되었다. 명예의 전당에는 평생을 태권도 발전에 헌신한 최순덕 관장(플로리다), 서영선 관장(조지아), 김주훈 관장(노스캐롤라이나)이 이름을 올렸다. 또한 명인상 대상에는 뉴욕의 신현옥 관장이 선정되어 큰 이목을 끌었다.
이날 행사에서는 다양한 교육 세미나도 열렸다. 강재진 교육분과 위원장은 '태권도 총론'을 주제로 강연을 펼쳤고, 정우진 태권도 타임지 발행인 관장은 '지도자로서의 모범과 지역사회와의 연계'에 대해 발표했다. 샤론 스틸 관장은 '세이피티 스포츠로서의 법적인 문제 고찰'을 주제로 강연하여 참석자들의 이해를 도왔다.
추가로, One Korea 재단 후원의 태권도 장학금 수여식에서는 크리스 정 학생이 "나의 태권도 인생과 미국과 한국의 동맹에 대한 이바지"라는 수필로 장학금을 수상하는 영예를 안았다. 이외에도 Joliet 대학의 이채량양, 조지워싱턴대의 김혜은양, 메릴랜드대학의 최콜린군, 웨인대의 아디스 에펜딕군이 장학금을 받았다.
행사 마지막 날에는 명정 한인 총연합회, 서상표 총영사, 샨스틸 주상원 의원, 이홍기 한인회장 등의 축사가 이어졌다. 세계 태권도 조중원 총재와 국기원 이동섭 원장, 태권도 진흥재단 이종갑 사무총장의 축하 메시지도 전달되었다.
최종현 회장은 폐회식에서 참가자들에게 감사의 인사를 전하며, 앞으로도 태권도의 발전과 확산을 위해 노력할 것을 다짐했다. 이번 행사는 태권도 고단자회가 주관하는 대규모 행사로, 참가자들에게 태권도의 가치를 재확인하는 기회가 되었다고 평가받고 있다.
U.S. Taekwondo Grandmasters Society (President John J Choi) was founded in 2003 as a non-profit organization in Dallas and has grown to 325 members in 40 states. On April 12, 120 members and 300 guests participated, and the Westin Airport Hotel in Atlanta attended. It was held successfully from April 12th to the 14th. GM Jae Kyun Shin of Oregon State was elected 6th president and will serve for 3 years starting in 2025.
The 22nd Anniversary Convention, the 16th Anniversary Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony, and the 4th Anniversary Myongin Awards Ceremony were held at this event. At the regular seminar, we had time to learn about ‘General Taekwondo Scope’ by Education Division Chair Jae-jin Kang, ‘Example as a Leader and Connection with the Community’ by Woo-jin Jung, publisher of Taekwondo Time magazine, and ‘Consideration of Legal issues as a safe sport’ by Director Sharon Steel. , we also had a meditation-loving memory session for our deceased sunbae G.M., colleagues, and hoobae Masters. We shared the slogan of respect for our sunbaenim, friendship for our colleagues, love for our hoobaenim, and that members come first. Chris Chung, a senior high school student (scheduled to attend Georgia Institute of Technology), who represented the Taekwondo scholarship award ceremony sponsored by Dr. Jai-Poong Ryu, founder of One Korea, received the award for his essay on “My Taekwondo Life and Contribution to the Alliance between the United States and Korea.” In addition, the Scholarship committee announced four award recipients: Chae-ryang Lee of Joliet College, Hye-eun Kim of George Washington University, Collin Choi of the University of Maryland, and Addis Ependyk of Wayne State University.
At this event, the 16th Hall of Fame recipients in 2024 have dedicated their lives to Taekwondo. G.M. Sun Tok Choe, who established the foundation of Taekwondo in Florida, GM Young Sun Seo of Georgia, and GM Ju Hun Kim of North Carolina received awards. GM Greg Kollars received the Taekwondo Ambassador Award, GM Sung Yong Ji of Georgia State received the Peace Award, and GM Sang Bok Chung of Georgia State received the Respected Parents of the Year Award. In addition, the most honorable Myongin award, GM Hyun Ok Shin, who contributed significantly to the growth of Taekwondo in New York, was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
After a birthday celebration ceremony for senior G.M.s over 80 years of age, including GM Kim Yu-jin, the oldest at 93 years old, a greeting from President John Choi, congratulatory remarks from the Myong Chong The Federation of Korean Association of USA, congratulatory remarks from Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Atlanta, Suh Sangpyo, and congratulatory remarks from state senator Shawn Steel and Korean Association President Hong Ki Lee also delivered congratulatory messages. There were also messages delivered by World Taekwondo President Chung Won Choue, Kukkiwon President Lee DongSup, and Taekwondo Promotion Foundation Secretary General Lee Jong Gab. In addition, Selection Chairperson Dr. He-Young Kimm introduced the history of the Hall of Fame, and Gwinnett Judge Shawn Bratton concluded the event with closing remarks and congratulatory remarks.
